The Social Services Department was estab-lished in September 1956 and contributes to the hospital's goal of providing care for the whole person. Its primary focus is to assist patients and their families in addressing spiritual, emotional, family, social, and financial problems. The department therefore plays an important role in the efforts of the entire health care team. Over 400 volunteers also assist patients on the wards and in the Outpatient Department. In addition to individual patient services, support groups for people suffering a variety of different disorders have been established, facilitating mutual support and caring. Recognizing the need for concentrated effort in addressing particular problems, the Social Services Department has been instrumental in establish the following foundations: The ROC Children's Burn Foundation (1988), The ROC Hospice Foundation (1990), and the ROC Premature Infants Foundation (1991).
