Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

Each baby comes to enjoy the world, hearing their mommy’s sweet voice, touching the warmth of their daddy’s big palms, and feeling the love of the world. We know how precious their time is and strive to make their life brighter and better.

Pediatric Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular diseases in children and infants can be roughly classified into congenital and acquired. Congenital heart disease is an abnormal cardiovascular structure, and about six to ten out of every 1,000 births suffer from this disease. Some heart diseases are caused by inflammation, viral or bacterial infections, or metabolic abnormalities after birth. We classify them as acquired heart diseases such as myocarditis, pericarditis, rheumatic heart disease, cardiomyopathy, etc. Some unexplained diseases, such as Kawasaki disease, can also cause cardiovascular complications.

Pediatric cardiovascular team of MacKay Children’s Hospital

The pediatric cardiovascular team of MacKay Children‘s Hospital is multidisciplinary. Our members include pediatric cardiac surgeons, fetal and pediatric cardiologists, obstetricians, anesthesiologists, radiologists…etc. There are also members from other departments, such as nurses, echocardiographic technicians, and perfusionists as well.

Our members are experienced in taking care of patients, both children, and adults, with congenital heart diseases, cardiac dysrhythmia, and cardiopulmonary failure. ECMO can be set up routinely in all our intensive care units. Our staff are well trained and fully cooperated to provide extraordinary quality medical/surgical care. Both the numbers of open-heart surgery and cardiac catheterizations are within the top-ranked hospitals in Taiwan. Furthermore, we introduced the concept of “ fetal nurses”, who continually keep in touch with the family since the baby was diagnosed to have congenital heart disease, and support the family to face the incoming tremendous pressure associated with the process of treatment, and making the schedule more efficient and well-ordered.

Last but not the least, we invite the children who received open heart surgery for continual active surveillance of their development with several validated assessment tools which might provide early intervention of developmental delay of children with congenital heart disease, and ensure better outcomes through this active surveillance.
